MALACHI 3:8-12
“Will a man rob God? yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes: and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground, neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts. And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the Lord of hosts.”
Tithing & Offering
One of the most important concepts when it comes to giving to God is the foundational truth that all things come from God. All things were made by Him and without him was not anything made that was made (St. John 1:3). David declared that earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein (Psalms 50:10-12). God further proclaims through Haggai that He owns the silver and gold that fills the core of the earth (Haggai 2:8). In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth signifying that God is the owner, possessor, and Lord of all.
Therefore, if we have anything it is because the Lord gives it to us and allows us to own it. Deuteronomy 8:18 declares that it is God that gives us power to get wealth; so not only is He the owner of all things, God also gives us power to access a portion of what He has so that we can live thereby and provide for our lives. The concept of being a good steward comes from the concept that everything we have comes from God and He makes us the manager of a portion of His things.
When we embrace these truths, it is easy for us to justify what we give to God by way of tithes and offering. Proverbs 3:9-10 instructs us to “honor the Lord with thy substance, and with the first fruits of all thine increase: so shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.” God wants us to remember Him first. We see in Genesis patriarch Abraham paying tithes to Melchizedek, who was an Old Testament type of God manifested in flesh, and the Bible declares that Abraham gave Melchizedek tithes of all (Genesis 14: 17-20). Abraham’s giving of a tenth laid a foundation for the principle of tithing and giving to God first. As spiritual heirs of the promises and covenant God made with Abraham, we should practice the faith that Abraham operated in and willing pay a tenth of our increase along with a freewill-offering based on our love for God into righteous storehouses so that God’s Kingdom and agenda can further advance.
